It's not the worst option, although it's difficult to say if there are other risks without knowing what other things your repository is configured to do.
An alternative low-barrier solution would be to update the password on the DataCite account that EPrints uses (via the DataCite site).
This should make any coining/minting tasks fail in EPrints.
There may be other impacts to this too – especially if the same credentials are used in multiple places (on other systems) for DOI-related tasks.
Either option should leave tasks in the queue for your develop to address when they return.
