Cannot Upload File Under Manage Deposits

Sorry but I am very new to eprints system. 
I have been trying to setup eprints in Centos 64bit since early June. However, I have encountered many issues during installation and configuration steps. Worse is, I am not familiar with Perl and XML.
When I finally managed to start eprints service and can login via eprints website, I cannot upload file under Manage Deposits. I check the error_log in /var/log/httpd, and saw the following:

Failed to mkdir /opt/eprints3/archives/eprints/documents/disk0/00: Permission denied
Unable to write to /opt/eprints3/archives/eprints/documents/disk0/00/00/00/09/01/unnamed.png: No such file or directory
EPrints::Storage: No plugins available to store file/28
file/28::set_file(unnamed.png) failed: No storage plugins succeeded
document.15 failed to create subdataobj on document.files at /opt/eprints3/perl_lib/EPrints/DataObj.pm line 313.

I am very sure I have created user and group eprints, and the permission of /opt/eprints3/ is set to eprints:eprints. Please advise.

What happens when you run:

ls -ld /opt/eprints3/archives/eprints/
ls -ld /opt/eprints3/archives/eprints/documents/

Who owns these directories?

Try:

sudo chown -R eprints:eprints /opt/eprints3

Hi Yeat Yee Lee,

Which user is your Apache webserver running as?


I think in CentOS it's in:

/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf


Look for the lines: 

User  apache
Group apache

If this server will only be used for EPrints, change these to:
User  eprints
Group eprints

If you are installing EPrints on a server that is already used for other things, then another approach may be needed. Let us know if this is the case and we will help!

Hi,

On CentOS there is also SELinux - which may be stopping Apache from writing to the directories.


If you run:

> sestatus

the output might contain:

SELinux status: enabled


To run a quick check (don't do this on a production system), run:

> setenforce 0


And try uploading a document (you might need to restart Apache too).

   I can download the document. But when clicked the URL, I got the following:



   I got the same error message either logged in or without login. Please advise.

Aaah, this is the same problem - but the directory isn't listed on the wiki page.

But there may also be other directories that need permission too.

 

From a message on the eprints tech list (http://threader.ecs.soton.ac.uk/lists/eprints_tech/21145.html), it might be best to apply the permission to the whole EPrints installation directory:

chcon -R -t httpd_sys_content_rw_t /opt/eprints3

 

But this might be too 'open' (hopefully other people on this list running EPrints on CentOS can provide some thoughts!).

 

 

Also, the EPrints Tech list might be a better place to ask technical questions (see details here: https://wiki.eprints.org/w/Contact#eprints-tech_Mailing_List).
