Why does emscripten contain such an ancient version of Node?

'BigInt is not defined.'

Or - how important is it that specific versions be used?

I hasn't been my experience at all that new node ever breaks old stuff.

No reason in particular. That version of node is sufficient to run all the JS necessary to run Emscripten itself, so we haven’t needed to update it recently. It would certainly work with a newer version of node as well. For running your own code that uses newer features you should definitely bring your own node.
