EMAN and the new M1 chip

Hello EMAN group,

I'm curious if anyone has some experience maximizing performance of EMAN with the new Mac M1 chip - both CPU and GPU usage. Any insights are appreciated. Thank you all.

Anaconda (and in some cases the dependency authors) hasn't finished making all of the necessary dependencies available for a native build. While there is an alpha release of TensorFlow available which is capable of some amount of hardware acceleration on M1, some of the related packages also aren't available yet.  Bottom line is, while EMAN itself compiles fine, it may be some months before we can produce a naive M1 version, and possibly some time after that before we could try and take advantage of its GPU.

The Mac Intel package of EMAN2 will run properly on M1 macs. Single thread performance on the M1 Mac Mini (e2speedtest) is about 10% higher than single thread performance on a Core i5 3.0 Ghz 6 core Mac Mini.
