It's nice having a place to walk near home along the Passi Road and open spaces along a power line corridor. On evenings like this and at the right level of early evening moonlight, the male woodcock can easily be heard "peenting" to start its display followed by the sound of flight up. Then a moment of quiet before the sound of air passing through his feathers as he plunges back to earth for another round of display..
This has been going on nightly for the past two weeks. I wonder how much success in mating with female woodcocks to go off and nest, Maybe it will be a good year of woodcock chicks running around the forest by early June.
