You can make an indoor air filter from a box fan, a furnace filter and some duct tape or a bungee cord.
You can find more info and instructions here or look at the photo for the general idea.

I have one of these running, it works.

I learned this trick back during the Greenwood Lake fire of '21.  It worked well then.  At our house, it's currently much worse than I remember it being during Greenwood... I'm going to put filters on both of our box fans (one still has the filter from '21 but I'm going to replace that today).  Even then, given current conditions here in Ely, I'll be very leery about opening any windows to cool the house.  The fans will be useful for filtering the smoke that's already in the house though.

Note that, if your fans are anything like mine, they have a temperature sensor.  If the fan gets too hot (and the filter will make them run hot), it will shut off.  OTOH, if your fan does not have such a sensor, I can see a potential fire hazard.  Don't need fire hazards right now.

Most smoke particles are too small to be efficiently captured by a residential filter.

Even some particles are better than no particles at all.  Air purifiers that actually can handle smoke tend to sell out very quickly in situations such as ours... as I also found out during Greenwood.

If you have a real silk scarf that can stretch over the intake, the silk can assist the filter.
Old cowboy trick; many of those "bandanas" around their throats were silk.

Around 10 am today (Wed), I took a photo of the particles that had been falling on west side of Ely since last night. Some of these debris bits are 1/4 inch. Ashes fell last night.  I'm sure these pieces will be filtered out.
