Does anyone in the club have experience with or knowledge about DxO PureRAW or DxO Photolab?  For me, it looks like PureRAW might be worth having.

DXO PureRAW has certainly received a lot of buzz in the past few weeks.  I didn't know anything about it so decided to download the trial and give it a try.  I've seen some very good results and have created a short YouTube Video showing the workflow with LR.  I currently see it as another tool in the arsenal.  I don't see using it on every image, but for higher ISO images, I can easily see that it would be a great option.  In my video, I did not show the direct comparison of the noise reduction in DXO Pure Raw (DeepPrime) versus Topaz Denoise AI, but I did discuss it.  I have tested several images and done the comparison and my results have shown that DeepPrime does a better job than Topaz Denoise AI in each instance that I tested and is MUCH faster.  

As I mentioned in my brief video, for users of DXO Photo Lab Elite (and maybe some other levels - I don't know) already have the ability to use the raw processing that DXO Pure RAW uses as well as DeepPrime.  The big deal about this product is that it works very nicely for LightRoom and Photoshop users and DXO realized they were not going to sway people to give up those tools to buy a new RAW Demosaic engine.

Hi Keith,

That is very helpful.  I have not downloaded PureRAW yet.  As you and others suggest, the great thing is that you use PureRAW without having to totally change your workflow like you would need to in order to use DxO PhotoLab.  It does appear that PureRAW may over sharpen in a few cases.  Clearly there are ways to manage that with blending.

I have used DXO Photolab Elite ver 4 since last summer with NIK Plug -ins which I have used for years with LR.
The Deep Prime is quite good and I have not been concerned as much with higher ISO now. I am a simple PP guy
so it fits my needs well.

An interesting and probably really useful tool both for more recent images and when trying to rework those older images that have just been taking up memory space for years ...

Here is a link to another youtube review that essentially comes to the same conclusion that Keith does in his but also has some more A-B comparisions using a variety of images

Thanks.  I had looked at a number of videos about PureRAW including this one.  A lot of the info was pretty repetitive.  I do not think I have found any information that makes PureRAW consistent superior to the Topaz software.  There are a couple of use-related issues that may make Topaz Sharpen AI and DeNoise preferable.  There are no sliders in PureRAW so you have a take it or leave it situation.  In addition, PureRAW is meant to only operate on raw files.  I have been scanning old slides.  At Gary's recommendation, I normally use the Topaz apps in stand-alone mode.  If I output an image at any stage in my workflow to a tiff file with no layers and no alpha channels and run one of the Topaz apps the results are usually good to excellent.  That all said, it would appear there is a good chance that PureRAW may be better than Topaz on some raw files, especially some old raw files.  I plan to get PureRAW and try it.

Like many one-trick-pony things it has it's pros and cons but it seems to work well most of the time for what it is designed to do.  It is just one tool for your processing tool box [like wrenches ... different ones do different things better than others of the same size.] 

$90 can seem to be pricey but when compared to cost of a good new lens or something else it isn't too bad and is a one time buy rather than a yearly subscription.  And as Keith says it is fast so can be a time saver when used as appropriate.

I have changed my mind.  I do not plan to shell out the $90.  I received some information involving much more thorough tests of the DxO software from Daniele DiStanio.  PureRAW is a one-trick pony whereas Topaz deNoise AI and Sharpen AI give you sliders and options.  Without even doing any tests I am going to assume that in most instances where PureRAW does a better job than Topaz is when my slider positions in Topaz are not as good as the default settings in PureRAW that you cannot adjust.  The one-click aspect of PureRAW may be a great benefit to the workflow of some photographers, but not for me.
