If it’s any consolation, UK losses were significant this spring – Beast from The East finished off weak colonies, and not just those of amateurs, but commercial beekeepers as well. Some reported 80-100%. In the US the losses were about 40%. Usual level in this country is about 10-20%. I lost 7/40.
Swarming in London is about over; fairly often bees will occupy an empty hive, but not yours, clearly.
If you managed to buy a split now your job would be to get it through winter – varroa treatment and feeding – and that is often the hardest job for a beginner. You might consider waiting until spring and let the seller bear the risk of winter loss.
