Is that possible for a user to be created/authenticated using SSO in the openedx hawthorn.1
Any useful information, links, help etc would be greatly appreciated.

At the bottom of this help article, you can see that this is one of the scenarios we support on our SSO integration with Tahoe (Open edX-as-a-service)

Thank you very much for the link you provided.
It is my mistake but I mean CAS authentication not SSO using external services.

According to this page https://github.com/edx/configuration/wiki/Setting-Up-External-Authentication which is for an older version, I should enable AUTH_USE_CAS and set the EDXAPP_CAS_SERVER_URL
But in Hawthorn.1 there are no such settings in the lms.env.json

The AUTH_USE_CAS parameter is only at /edx/app/edxapp/edx-platform/lms/envs/common.py
and the EDXAPP_CAS_SERVER_URL is at /edx/app/edx_ansible/edx_ansible/playbooks/roles/edxapp/defaults/main.yml

I have tried enabling the AUTH_USE_CAS but upon compilation it complains about invalid configuration when I set this to True.

What shall I do?

Sorry, I don't have any experience setting up CAS with Open edX. We primarily use SAML2 and OAuth2.
