Hi,

I would like to know whether edx platform has this feature which helps Professors to deliver live content online instead of recording a video and sharing it to students?
If this feature is not available in edx platform, the team is having any plans to get this feature included as part of edx platform in future ?

I feel if you want to deliver knowledge, knowledge should also be delivered Live like what we see in TV.

Please provide me with your valuable information.

Regards,
Mohan Gayam

BigBlueButton (BBB)  is an open source live video streaming solution designed for education and has been integrated with other LMS platforms like Moodle and Sakai (http://bigbluebutton.org/open-source-integrations/), but not yet with Open edX. I'm cc'ing the founder Fred Dixon who can maybe speak to any possible integrations of BBB with Open edX.

Hi Everyone,

I'm the product manager for BigBlueButton.

I just checked the docs for edX and I see it supports IMS Learning Tools Interoperability (http://edx-partner-course-staff.readthedocs.org/en/latest/exercises_tools/lti_component.html).  With LTI support, you could easily edX with BigBlueButton.  See

  https://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/LTI

The latest version of BigBlueButton supports real-time sharing of audio, video, slides, desktop, and chat.  We also support WebRTC-based audio if the user is using FireFox of Chrome.  If you want the latest information on our project, see the recent presentations recorded at our recent developer summit in Brazil.

  http://bigbluebutton.org/2014/12/03/developer-summit-v-porto-alegre-brazil/

These presentations were given and recorded using BigBlueButton (of course).   If you want to try setting up your own BigBlueButton server, grab a Ubuntu 14.04 server and see

  https://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/090InstallationUbuntu

We've been focused on building an open source web conferencing system for on-line learning for almost seven years.  We've lots of plans ahead for mobile and HTML5 clients as well.

If anyone is serious about trying BigBlueButton with edX, let me know.

Regards,... Fred

Hi Fred,

We are using open edX in a corporate environment and have a need for a tool like Big Blue Button.  Thank you for your information regarding LTI components.  Do you have any other information that would be helpful in developing this tool?

Thank you.

Hi Fred,

I have successfully integrated BigBlueButton with our edx (Both running on the AWS). Currently, users are displayed as 'Moderator' and 'Attendee'. I am still trying to tweak to make correct that so that users will be displayed with their usernames. Do you have any suggestion as to how I can correct that? Thanks

Hello Henry,

Is it possible to share how you integrated Blue Button with edx? I have already installed edx on an AWS instance and would appreciate any help (including some docs or examples) on how you were able to integrate Blue Button with edx

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Usman,

We're looking to work closely with a few educational institutions to get the edX BigBlueButton integration solid (thanks to Nate for all his help so far).  Ping me directly.  Looking forward to working with you.

Henry, we can fix the issue you've found with the usernames.

Hello Frederick,

Today I installed successful BigBlueButton.  I watched your YouTube on LTI integration with Blackboard.  I have enabled LTI in edX, and I am getting the error message page saying "Connection could not be established".  I am interested in getting BigBlueButton working with edX.  I am using the defaults that came with the installation.  What advice and steps can you share in getting BigBlueButton working with edX? Thanks.

   i've installed and integrated BBB with Edx, and the LTI part is working perfectly except the usernames, could you please tell me to display usernames instead of moderator and attendee?
   Thanks in advance.

@Frank

The reason for not been able to see the user names in BBB is that the LMS is not sending them. When configuring the provider in Blackboard make sure to check at least the 'Name' in 'User Fields to Send' that is part of the section 'Organization Policies'.

@Frank,

Yeah, sorry. I completely mixed things up with the LMS. Although the issue is the same. For some reason the parameters required for identifying users are not passed along with the launch. I can tell because I have seen logs of launches generated from edx and they come without any of these parameters:

lis_person_name_given=Jane
lis_person_name_family=Public
lis_person_name_full=Jane Q. Public
lis_person_contact_email_primary=us...@school.edu

There may be a way in edx to activate them, but I am not sure about it. According to the document you referenced there is a way to send the username and the email by setting some parameters to true:

Request user’s email If Open in New Page is set to True, you can also request user information. Set this value to True to request the learner’s email address.
Request user’s username If Open in New Page is set to True, you can also request user information. Set this value to True to request the learner’s username.

Perhaps the developer of the edx tool consumer can respond this question.

I'm sorry again. I am the developer of the integration but for BigBlueButton as the LTI Tool Provider.

JF

Thanks Jesus Federico for the answer.well I've tried "request user's username and request user's email".but no luck.
I hope Edx developer team has an answer for this.

Hi Mohan,

There are several options to deliver live content:
  • big blue button
  • shindig.com
  • google hangouts
  • youtube live streaming
  • skype for business (microsoft supports it within Office 365 for Education)

They are all different and fits different business scenarious. What is your case? what type of content are you going to deliver? What type of students engagement do you need?

Hello Guys,

Do you know if BBB is suitable for a one to many broadcast with around 600 people to watch and listen ?

Thanks,

it's all boils down to a hardware :)

on a decent machine, it will handle 600 outbound streams. Alternative approach is to make use of BBB cloud service, it's scalable and relatively cheap.

Hello Fred,

First of all, thanks for bigbluebutton, a nice opensource tool.

I want to use it with Open edx so I tried running below command inside the openedx devstack VM:

     sudo apt-get install bbb-lti

But it returned error saying "E: Unable to locate package bbb-lti". So I am assuming I have to install bigbluebutton? Do I need to install bigbluebutton inside the devstack vm ? Or is there any option to use an externally installed bigbluebutton ?

Seems I am confused. I think I can have bigbluebutton in separate server and install bbb-lti tool in that bigbluebutton server and it might work. Let me give it a try.

Yes!  Try that approach.  We would recommend you use BigBlueButton 2.0-beta, se

(it has breakout rooms, multi-user whiteboard, and an updated user interface).  You can see the docs for the bbb-lti tool here

Don't hesitate to post back if you run into any issues.

Thanks, I got it to work. But couldn't get username display to work.

In open edx, I selected option to display username(after clicking edit and while adding lti url, there is drop down for that). It didn't work in inline mode. I read somewhere in open edx that it won't send usernames if it's not Window mode. So I enabled new window mode. Then in the course it showed button instead of course and after clicking button it asked consent whether the user want to send usernames to third party or not. I clicked yes, but couldn't see username other than moderator, approved.

Thanks for recommending version 2, I will inform the same to my customer.

Thanks for the support.

Hi Bhaskar,

> Then in the course it showed button instead of course and after clicking button it asked consent whether the user want to send usernames to third party or not.

This is strange -- are you able to login to your BigBlueButton server and watch the incoming request log for HTTP request

  /var/log/nginx/bigbluebutton.access.log

You can see a log for the LTI requests here

  /var/log/bigbluebutton/bbb-lti.log

Tail the above logs and do another request from Open edX and see if you see the incoming user name on the LTI launch.

Regards,... Fred

Username is coming in this line:

where admin2 is the username.
