Self generated certificates only available after a certain date?

So, 

I want to set a course with some certificates and whatnot. 

I want the students to be able to request the certificates themselves. 

I know I can set a certificate available date to a certain date on the future at course mode overviews. 

The system however seems to ignore that setting and just release them as soon as I put it on self paced mode. 

Is there any way of having the course in self paced mode and holding back certificates for a while?

So far we are going to try to tell teachers to only switch the course to self paced mode when they want certificates to be available
