Hi all!

We were just trying to generate examples of mobile tech that is expressly designed to support instructors. I know that I've seen examples (a tablet app for Wallcology is one I remember for certain), but I don't know that I've seen much that made it to be a publication. Have any of you written (or seen) any?

Here's my AERA paper from this year about the role of the teacher tablet in PLACE.

I can scrounge up a few others as well (give me a day to literature spelunk)

wallcology didn’t a dedicated application for the teacher.
(it needed one, but didn’t have one :-).

Tom, you once mentioned that Ben Shapiro's dissertation was about an application that helped teachers work with students on their science projects (as they were all progressing through their projects at different rates). I found this summary of Ben's thesis here  It doesn't sound like an example of mobile tech, but it seems to be tech designed to support instructors?

The dissertation didn't focus on the science project work, but some of the work before it did. I'm happy talk talk more about that sometime if y'all want.

What a great list to bring together - I'd love to see what you come up with Leilah!
And Mike - can you send the full reference for your paper?

You might want to look at Roberto Martinez Maldonado's work.  His MTdashboard looked at different ways to represent student behaviours for teachers in a multi-touch classroom. His thesis is here:  https://sites.google.com/site/rmartinezmaldonado2/martinezmaldonado_r_thesis.pdf?attredirects=0&d=1
And he's got a few papers on this in the CSCL 2013 proceedings.

We have only written a  little about the teacher tools in SynergyNet - though I'm trying to work on a paper about this it over the next few weeks.  There's a small section in the attached symposium from ICLS 2012.

Hi Emma,

I agree this is a great list to have!

Here's the reference (future dated for the upcoming AERA)

Tissenbaum, M. & Slotta, J. D. (2015, April). The Role of a Technology Framework in Orchestrating Real-Time Inquiry: SAIL Smart Space (S3). Paper to be presented at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), Chicago, IL.

Also I accidentally sent the blind review version - I've attached the final one with authors names attached.

I also attached the paper that talks a bit about our first attempt at a teacher tablet

Tissenbaum, M., & Slotta, J. D. (2012). Scaffolding a Knowledge Community for High School Physics. Proceedings of the 10th International Conference for the Learning Sciences (ICLS 2012) (pp. 436-440). Sydney, Australia.

I've also attached a Roschelle et al. paper that did a teacher feedback tablet - let me poke around some more to see if I have any others.

can I just say - y'all are awesome!

The reason we're asking is that Brian's research is around the design of tablet-based support tools for museum/zoo interpreters, which has even fewer prior work examples (although if you know of any please send them along, in case we missed them!). We thought teacher support tools might be more explored, but it looks like that's a pretty new area too. Thank you for the papers, Mike!

One question - who owns the educoder list? Could they add my lly...@uic.edu address? UIC recently disalowed forwarding of email to regular gmail addresses, so I now use lle...@uic.edu as my main one.

I had a museum studies master's student (who is a former teacher who decided to move into museum education) write a paper on mobile-based support tools for museum interpreters/educators last year. I have it on a laptop that needs a keyboard replacement, but I'll see if I can dig it up in a day or two and post the bibliography...

I think Turadg started the list so he's probably the admin (I'm cc-ing his gmail account just in case)

Hi folks,

Tony and Jim are also owners of the list. I just invited lle...@uic.edu and banja...@gmail.com.

FYI though, anyone can join by clicking the web link at the bottom of the messages. :)

Thanks everyone for all of the great recommendations! I would appreciate being added to the Educoder list as well (since presumably it's needed to be able to reply, meaning that Mike and Turadg might be the only ones to see this email...)
