Hi everybody,

A French user of my app reached out recently with a concern about the French data for the word 履く.

The single JMdict sense is "monter une corde sur un arc”, which looks like it corresponds to the 3rd English sense (marked archaic), “to affix (a bowstring to  bow)”.  They suggested a change to "porter des chaussures" or "porter un vêtement (membres inférieurs du corps)”.

Seems like this entry needs an update. Also, for what it’s worth, this reminds me a bit of the issue with 桜 that I reached out about back in June, where in French it had only the “horse meat” sense. Not sure if there’s a connection, but it seems oddly similar.

Thanks,
Chris Vasselli

Chris alerted me to this a few weeks back and I did some preliminary
investigations which showed that there was a problem affecting several
entries, but it then slipped off my radar. Sorry for not getting back
to you sooner, Chris.

The problem arose because back in 2017 I expanded the French coverage,
then based solely on Jean-Marc Desperrier's project
(http://dico.fj.free.fr/index.php) by adding entries from the rather
dormant Transifex project at
https://www.transifex.com/gnurou/jmdict-i18n/ Adding was fine, but
quite a few glosses coming from the Transifex group overlapped. I'd
looked at a sample of them and they all seemed to be expansions on
Jean-Marc's so I took the easy path of simply using them as
replacements. The entry for 履く turned out to be an exception.

I could (and probably should) fix that one pro-tem, but I need to find
the time to look at it properly.

HTH
