Hi,
Description:
We are currently performing Direct Messaging certification testing using the ETT tool and are encountering an issue with receiving messages for the MDN header validation test.
Test Case Details:
Test: SMTP MT Test 39 (Message with Good Header)
Direct Address: fh...@fhir.spryhealth.care
Vendor Hostname: mail.fhir.spryhealth.care
Issue Observed:
When executing SMTP MT Test 39, the ETT tool shows:
“Email sent Successfully”
A valid Message-ID is generated
However:
The message is not received on our SMTP server (Apache James)
No corresponding SMTP logs (MAIL FROM / RCPT TO / connection) are observed during the test
The message does not appear in the inbox for processing
Working Scenario (For Comparison):
When using “Send Direct Message” from the ETT tool:
Messages are successfully received
Processed correctly
MDNs are generated and sent back successfully
This is also reflected in the Message Status section where:
Status shows MDN_RECEIVED
Environment Details:
SMTP Server: Apache James
SMTP Port: 25 (publicly accessible)
MX रिकॉर्ड:
fhir.spryhealth.care → mail.fhir.spryhealth.care
DNS CERT record is correctly configured and validated
External connectivity to SMTP is confirmed (accessible from external networks)
Observations:
No inbound SMTP connection is logged during SMTP MT Test 39 execution
Indicates that the message may not be reaching our server at all
Other Direct messages from ETT are successfully delivered, suggesting partial connectivity
Request for Assistance:
Could you please help us verify:
Whether the message for SMTP MT Test 39 is being dispatched from ETT successfully?
If there are any delivery failures or routing issues on the ETT side?
Whether this test uses a different delivery mechanism or endpoint compared to “Send Direct Message”?
If there are any specific requirements (e.g., TLS, trust anchors, policy constraints) that could prevent delivery of this specific test message?
Additional Information:
We can provide timestamps and Message-IDs for correlation if needed
Logs from our SMTP server show no incoming connection attempts for this test
Attachments:
Screenshot showing successful send (SMTP MT Test 39)
Screenshot showing successful MDN processing for normal Direct messages
Conclusion:
Our system is able to receive and process standard Direct messages successfully, but messages sent as part of the MDN header validation test (SMTP MT Test 39) are not reaching our server.
We would appreciate your guidance in identifying the root cause.
Thanks & Regards,
Pranav Kulkarni

Hi Jayaraj,
I have already uploaded our trust anchor into the Edge Testing Tool (ETT), but the issue still persists.
B1 (Receive using SMTP) and H1 (Send Direct Message) are working correctly, and messages are being received by our server. However, H1 delivery notification tests (SMTP MT Test 39, 40, and 41) are not able to receive.
