This 300 page book, edited by coral reef biologists Dr. Thomas J F Goreau and Dr. Robert K. Trench, features 15 chapters by pioneers in regeneration of degraded marine ecosystems, showing decades of successful examples from coral reefs, sea grasses, salt marshes, oyster and mussel reefs, algae mariculture, and fisheries habitat around the world.
Most chapters are from thesis research by students, mostly in Indonesia. A special focus of the book is a focus on Biorock Electric Reef Technology, for whole-ecosystem marine electrotherapy using extremely low, safe, beneficial electrical currents in the natural life-giving and healing range that all marine organisms evolved to use billions of years ago, the opposite of the high-voltage, high-current, high-frequency death-dealing electrical currents we all fear!
The result of applying Biorock Technology is that coral reefs and other ecosystems are kept alive when they would die from extreme environmental heat and pollution, and are regenerated with astonishing biodiversity in places where there has been no natural regeneration. Biorock technology, as shown in the pioneering scientific research papers in this book, produces the greatest benefits at the lowest costs for coastal ecosystems that are collapsing everywhere. Biorock also grows back severely eroded beaches at record rates, and grows low-cost carbon-negative limestone structures and building materials in the sea that are harder and cheaper than Portland cement, so is a truly revolutionary technology for almost all coastal managment problems.
This book is the marine sister volume to Geotherapy: Innovative Methods of Soil Fertility Restoration, Carbon Sequestration, and Reversing CO2 Increase, which focuses on regenerating land ecosystems, biomass, biodiversity, and productivity around the world, and is also available as a free download. Geotherapy has been made available for free download thanks to a donation to Remineralize The Earth, a non-profit organization for improving soil fertility with natural rock powders.
Innovative Methods of Marine Ecosystem Restoration has been made available free thanks to large numbers of small donations from students, most in $10, $15, and $20 amounts over decades, since the Global Coral Reef Alliance works without large donors, operational budgets, or salaries.

A professor at MIT, Stefan Helmreich, has written quite a bit about the science done on FLIP, but is out of town at the moment.
I can now locate the photos to show them, but it will take a while before we have the resources to scan and organize them!
I’ve also found the oldest video of prime healthy coral reefs, with my father in Jamaica!

It’s great to hear from you…and to hear that you found the FLIP photos! She is apparently being restored by DEEP in England. Kathy Sullivan is on their Board. I hope they are as interested in her history (of course relative to Walter) and etc. as they are in renovating her. I’d love to see the photos and wonder if Kathy would be interested.
We have been talking about you and your incredible collection many times over the past month, as we are attempting to create a repository for data. More on that later.

Phil, has NOAA suddenly terminated the Coral Reef Watch site of global sea surface temperature anomalies?
It was based on my analysis of the NOAA SST satellite data base.
It worked yesterday, but has suddenly has vanished, ending our ability to forecast coral bleaching worldwide!
