Gaps between SeisComp and slink2ew

I have a doubt about the operation of the slink2ew module when it obtains data from SeisComP.

My data acquisition system is made up of SeisComP which obtains signals from different data acquisition systems (reftek, nanometrics, raspberry shake).

The data obtained is stored in SeisComP. If there is a cut in the link between the stations and SeisComP, when communication between both is reestablished, the data is recovered by SeisComP.

On the other hand, I have an EARTHWORM system running with the slink2ew module that obtains the data stored in SeisComP, to then be inserted into a Winston database (through the export_generic, ImportEW and WWS modules).

The problem occurs when the network link between SeisComP and EARTHWORM is cut. The slink2ew module does not recover data in the period of time in which the link between the two was not active. Although this period of time was 5 minutes, for example.

Could this be due to misconfiguration of parameters in the slink2ew.d file? I'm attaching the slink2ew configuration file.

Ricardo, can you check if a file named "state.file" is created in your params directory?.

Also check the contents of the file, to see if slink2ew is properly writing the state of each stream.

Yes, I have verified that a file called "state.file" has been created. And I also checked the file content to see if slink2ew is correctly writing the state of each stream.

Hi Ricardo,

Can you share the log file for slink2ew? At your configured Verbosity of "1" you should see some decent diagnostic information, but you may need to increase it to see more details.

Hi Ricardo,

These lines indicate that the state file has been corrupted and explains why a connection is not able to resume:

20240312_UTC_15:35:28 error: could not parse line 380 of state file

In your config file the StateFile is specified as:

StateFile state.file

Are you perhaps using multiple slink2ew processes that are using the same "state.file" file? If so, they must each use different state files. The easiest way to make sure each slink2ew process is using separate state files, and my strong recommendation for all slink2ew users, is to specify the StateFile without a hard-coded file. When this is done, as documented in the slink2ew.d file, a state file name is generated specifically for the module by incorporating the module ID in this pattern: "slink<mod id>.state".

If you do not have multiple slink2ew processes. Please shutdown the slink2ew process and send the "state.file" so we can see what it looks like. While the system is shutdown you could remove the state file before starting the process again and see if that helps clear the corruption.

Hi Ricardo,

That state file is definitely corrupted. I do not know how that would happen. My best guesses would be either a) multiple processes are writing to the same state file (many entries are duplicated), or b) there is something unexpected about the OS or filesystem.

Regarding b), are you running on Windows? Then the state file writing may have issues with the MS default "text" mode. This issue is fixed, by changing the file open mode to binary, in the upstream libslink and will be included in the next release of libslink and hopefully slink2ew.

EARTHWORM v10 is running on Ubuntu Server (64-bit).

There is a single slink2ew module that receives all signals coming from a SeisComP3 system.

Could it be that a single module for more than 150 signals is too much? Will it be convenient to have several slink2ew modules running? Although the source is the same. I mean that all the signals are obtained from the same SeisComP system.

That shouldn't be a problem, but honestly I'm not really sure what is too much for a single module. It might be worth a try to split up the work into multiple slink2ew instances. But if you do that I strongly recommend letting slink2ew determine the state file name by not specifying a fixed file as described earlier. Either way I would not expect a heavily loaded module to affect state file writing, as this happens after connections are closed and without any threading, etc.

One observation: your config file sent earlier had the StateFile specified as "state.file", but the state file you sent via this list was named "state.inpres". What that the correct state file?
