Hello Everyone,

Last week was the launch of two important books by Claire Barker and Helen Smith from Hampshire EMTAS. Developed with members of Hampshire’s GTRSB communities, the authors say that “while the books are aimed at children and families from these communities, they are suitable for children from all walks of life.” Carol and Helen managed the script and artwork, while we took on the tasks of book design, sound enabling with PENpal, printing and publishing.

Click here to see a sample preview of both books so you can see topics and approach to talking about relationships and sex. The books are aimed at children aged 6 to 11.

The copy shown below will be mail-shotted to about 24000 schools and nurseries after next week’s half term break. In the meantime please let others know about this book.

All best,

Robene

Mantra Lingua with Hampshire EMTAS would like to clarify some points about their two RSE books, How we keep ourselves safe (Jesse’s story) and How we keep ourself safe (Mary-Kate’s story), published in 2023.   The books follow Jesse and Mary-Kate who are finding out how to keep themselves safe as they grow up within their community and in online spaces.  This is part of the statutory Relationships and Sex Education curriculum at Key Stage 2.  Written in consultation with Irish Traveller, Romany and Showmen parents, the books cover that statutory curriculum in a way that is mindful of the cultural beliefs and sensitivities of our Traveller communities.

These books are a resource to be used by an adult in school to support discussion with children in Years 5 and 6.  The primary focus of the books is to educate children to keep themselves safe.  The book should only be used with children from Traveller communities with prior parental consent, and pupils should not be given the book to look at unsupervised.  Neither should the book be used with younger children.  Whilst we encourage parents to talk to their children about such matters and recognise that parents might themselves find the books useful in doing that, the book should only be sent home if requested by a parent.  Whilst the books are aimed at children and families from Traveller communities, they are suitable for children from all walks of life.

We appreciate your engagement and hope this addresses your concerns.  Do reach out to us directly if you have any further queries.

Hi Erica

Unfortunately we have had to pulp all the books due to problems from certain sectors.

Hampshire are reworking the content and we will publish by June, once the content is updated.

This is  a sensitive area and I am sure that the authors in Hampshire EMAS will sort things out.

Best wishes

Robene
