Good morning, colleagues

If anyone has read the Kate Clanchy book ‘Some Kids I Taught and What They Taught Me’ and shares my deep concern about both the book currently on sale, and the planned new edition, then you may wish to read (and I hope sign) this open letter to Picador Books.
For context you could also look at #DiReadsClanchy on Twitter for extracts and commentary, or read this article by Monisha Rajesh

I am bemused how NALDIC came to ask Ms Clanchy to be a Conference 2020 keynote speaker, a year subsequent to the publication of this book.

I would very much appreciate a statement from NALDIC  about this matter to be made public before October when I have to decide whether our values still coincide and if I will continue with my membership.

Best wishes

Di Leedham

Hi,

If anyone would like to start a relief collection at their schools for the Afghan refugees who have just arrived, the organisation I’ve been put onto by a neighbour is

Currently these refugees in need of clothes, nappies, buggies, TEFL teachers or people to help orientate the families new to the UK and immigration lawyers.
Food banks are next.  As you know airlifts have come at the eleventh hour meaning many have only the clothes they’re standing up in.

I understand that many of the men are being sent to the North and many of the women posted in London - some women are staying in safe houses because of their work against the Taliban (lawyers, journalists, judges).

Best wishes,

Sophie

This is excellent Diane.

This is a horrendous breach of the trust our students have in us.

Thank you for sharing the details for Care4Calais.
I have decided to Swim2Calais for Care4Calais.  I am swimming the 34km of the English Channel (virtually) to generate sponsorship for Care4Calais.  I have made a start with the Channel swim and I am 5.5km across.

My mission is to raise (at least) £500 for refugees whilst drawing attention to the invaluable work Care4Calais do and the essentials they provide.

Thanks again,
Jen

Thanks so much for this information.  I have been told by my local care4calais that they are NOT collecting for Afghan families.  However the government website allows you to offer things to the area where you live- see this link https://www.help-refugees-uk.service.gov.uk/ and obviously there are lots of other organisations asking for donations.  It feels like it would be a good time to share good practice advice on welcoming refugee children, young people and families into schools.  My reading for my research found that we have to do everything we know we should do - and better- for these vulnerable families.  Underpinned by a thorough anti racist strategy and staff training.  Kathryn

Dear Kathryn,

Having just spent the weekend packing up boxes of donations in my neighbours garden with a team of volunteers for Care4Calais, I wrote to the North London manager to seek clarification after your post.

Here is further information from Care4Calais:

We are collecting for Afghan Refugees and indeed have already distributed and met new arrivals in Manchester and Central London. See post.

We have specific donation links on our website.  One for Afghan refugees and one for all refugees in the UK and France. We also have specific drop off places on a map link on the site.

We also continue collect donations and support asylum seekers and refugees who are already in the UK ( Afghan, Syrian, Yemeni, Eritrean , Sudanese).   Donations will go to a number of families and individuals (according to requirements, sizes , gender) who desperately need them whatever their nationality.

Currently in my area (North & West London), we are involved with Afghan donations in Paddington and NW11. Afghan refugees are currently (as far as I know) in Watford, Kings Cross and Manchester.   I and my small team also continue to support the same people we have been supporting here in the UK over the past year.

It may be the case that the person your contact spoke to at Care4calais is continuing to support and collect for the current hostels we cover with mixed refugee nationalities and therefore said.

All of this is available on our website.  Care4calais does not claim to collect for one nationality and distribute to another, not do we only look after one set of refugees.  We have issued a statement making it clear that people who wish to only donate to Afghan Refugees can do so by the links on our site, but that, more than donations at this stage (because this is going to be long haul) we need volunteers.

Best wishes,

Sophie

Also very important blog on the care4calais facebook page about the need to support ALL refugees- frustration about the government's sudden focus on welcome not hostility, but also hope that public opinion, having seen what causes people to become refugees, is influencing change: https://www.facebook.com/1046117708754519/posts/4661054020594185/
