Hi friends, I am very new to E-prime. I am working on an E-prime program with lots of movie clips, all in avi format. This format has been working well when I tested with a small number of videos in the preliminary stage. However, after I added all 84 videos, E-prime becomes very unstable. Sometimes the program goes very smoothly and sometimes it crashes and I get the message "unable to update frame error", with error number 11031. I have tried to reduce the frame per second from 30 to 25. I have also tried different file formats (avi, mp4). I was also wondering if 84 videos are too many that make E-prime overload so I have tried to break down the experiment into smaller blocks and lists and separate them into smaller files. But this error still appears occasionally. I am very desperate now as I am on a tough timeline. Did anyone encounter the same problem before? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

1) Please see https://groups.google.com/d/topic/e-prime/1kUThunYY00 .

2) Please submit this to PST Support. And then please let us know what
they say.

Finally, one word: codecs.

Hi David,

Thank you for such prompt reply. I have a look at all discussions on related topics and I come to a few possible solutions.

1. Codec issue. Transcoding all avi files using ffmpeg. May I ask which particular software or link do you use for transcoding?
2. Problem with loading the videos: Maybe I should try pre-release or pre-loading options? Or should I prolong the display of the fixation cross before the video display?
3. I am also wondering if using stretch for the video object is a possible problem?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Samantha,

I still run into this error occasionally, when I run my experiment on a different computer.

Two things I would advise:

1. Avoid the stretch option. You should use your video editing software to change the pixel dimensions. I'm using the 640X480 default resolution with a video size of about 500X375. The smaller, the better.

2. If you haven't done so already, run through the codec config option.

Samantha,

Here is the link for ffmpeg: https://ffmpeg.org/ . It is a
command-line tool, so it does take some learning.

In my experience, PreRelease, pre-loading (Generate PreRun =
TopOfProcedure), prolonging display of the fixation cross, and stretch
have had no effect on the stability or performance of movies. But if
you or anyone finds otherwise, please report back here.

That said, I agree with Phil that it is best to prepare all stimulus
materials so that E-Prime does not have to use stretch, and it is useful
to run the CodecConfig tool.
