Rod Punnett (www.presencing.ca) and I spent some quality time working through the Scharmer Grammar of the Social Field article. Subsequently we joined Scharmer’s free U.Lab MOOC course on applying theory U. We are in week four with 5 locals in a group and 45,000 people in 182 countries. I am experiencing it as the theory behind the magic of DF.  What Scharmer refers to as level 4 transformative listening, is what I recognize as the opening for choice creating in DF. The course offers a number of activities for approaching this state. As I see it, DF is another method.

About U.Lab

U.Lab is a new type of MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) that pushes the MOOC design envelope by blending a globally transformative platform with an eco-system of deep personal, locally grounded learning communities. The goal of the course is to empower change makers to co-sense and co-shape the future. Subject: [DF] Brilliant article on the Social Field

Hi everyone,

Someone forwarded me this insightful article on "The Grammar of the Social Field".

Scharmer's descriptions for 4 different kinds of space, time, etc (some of his tables and figures in this blog) seem to point to some things that have been difficult to express about DF and other emergent processes.

He makes very useful distinctions in it, that may be helpful to you..

take good care,
Bruce

Great, Dan! So good to hear you are doing the Theory U course.

And also good to read this: " I am experiencing it as the theory behind the magic of DF.  What Scharmer refers to as level 4 transformative listening, is what I recognize as the opening for choice creating in DF. The course offers a number of activities for approaching this state. As I see it, DF is another method."

Whenever I am in Europe teaching DF, practitioners often mention this to me... that when they do DF with a group, they experience people going through all of the levels of the U, in a very natural way.

I have heard this from enough people by now, that I think there is really something to it (not just my own hunch, that this is indeed the case!)

thanks for writing, and all best wishes...

Rosa

Hi Dan, Rosa and everyone,

I'm also doing the ULab course and helping to facilitate a hub in London, Kings Cross.

I agree DF is a great way to go through all the stages of the U without needing to mention all the convoluted vocabulary associated with Theory U. Though it's true this article is useful in examining what's happening.

I was wondering does anyone know if the Presencing Institute is aware of DF and wisdom councils?
Warm regards
Andy

Dear all

I have talked to Jim a few times and have written to Otto Scharmer and his team before but alas no response.  It’s probably about 18 months ago that I did so.  Maybe I should follow it up with a reminder but think it would be more powerful if Jim did so.

All my best wishes

If you want Otto's attention, consider signing up for the free online u.lab course and posting info about DF via Twitter, Facebook and in the course forum. There is a potential audience of 45,000 people exploring theory u. Also you can join or look in on hub groups in 182 countries, and join a coaching circle with other DFers or share DF with the group.

As part of the course Otto is doing some research on transformative listening, so submitting listening assessments that feature DF experiences would be another way to show up on his radar.

Responding to an old message here...

in recent travels through Europe (pre-global shutdown, and for the first time in the last five years...)  I've continued to ask experienced DF practitioners for their perspective on the statement that
with Dynamic Facilitation, participants move quite naturally through all of the phases of the U.

Their response?

"Of course."
