 ANY IDEAS?

Steps taken:
Upgrade from DSpace  3.3 to 6.3.
Database:  Postgres version was upgraded as well.
Followed steps to upgrade DSpace.  Then exported database.  Imported into upgraded Postgres/DSpace.

Turned Tomcat on -- depending on FlyWay migration to handle DSpace database changes.

There are broken links on the Community page.

Turned tomcat off and ran the following:
[dspace]/bin/dspace database migrate

Still no success.

ANY IDEAS?

Regards,

Hi Carolyn,

Please look for "ERROR" messages in your dspace.log immediately after you trigger the error message you mentioned previously. See https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSPACE/Troubleshoot+an+error for more info on finding errors in logs.

Unfortunately, it's extremely difficult to provide any useful suggestions without seeing the error messages that DSpace is logging behind the scenes (we'd be blindly guessing, and that won't be helpful). The logs you provided seem to only include INFO (and DEBUG) messages up to the point where the database was initialized. However, if the UI is throwing errors, then those would be logged later on in the dspace.log file.

If somehow there are no errors in the dspace.log file, also check your Tomcat & database logs to see if any errors are appearing there.

Tim

Thanks... no errors in dspace.log.  Will forward the tomcat logs with “ERROR” messages.

Had to turn my attention to another project, but I'm able to dive into this again!

There actually are no explicit "ERROR", "SEVERE", or "WARNING" messages.   I did check both the DSpace logs AND the Tomcat logs.

When I click on the top-level community pages  on my site at dspace.muhlenberg.edu:8080/librarydspace/community-list, I get a html 500 code  logged.  For example, when you click on "Center For Ethics" on the community-list page, the 500 error code is generated.  Still, no detailed error messages were in either the DSpace or Tomcat logs.

Is there a way to configure DSpace so that the detailed error is displayed on the web screen rather that the generic user-friendly error?

Below are the contents of my localhost_access_log file from today:

Hi Carolyn,

I'm not sure what the root cause of the problem is, but there's a chance it's tied to the JSPUI interface.

I noticed you also have XMLUI deployed and as far as I could see there, accessing communities seems to work there: http://dspace.muhlenberg.edu:8080/xmlui/community-list

http://dspace.muhlenberg.edu:8080/xmlui/handle/10718/713
http://dspace.muhlenberg.edu:8080/xmlui/handle/10718/2154

hope this helps,

Wow.  I was so focused on the jsp interface I hadn't thought to look at the xml one.  This is quite helpful and should at least get us using 6.3 until the issue is resolved with jsp.

Thanks!

Hi Carolyn,

you're welcome! By default, XMLUI on DSpace 6 still ships with the Mirage 1 theme enabled.

To make your DSpace immediately responsive and look a lot better, switch on Mirage 2:

cheers,

Hello Bram,

Very useful information that you have provided.

Hows does Mirage differ from Mirage 2?

Can you provide a link to a site running Mirage 2 theme?

many thanks

Richard Dennis

We’re running a (customised) Mirage2 theme: https://researcharchive.lincoln.ac.nz/

I can’t remember all the differences but one key one for us is that Mirage2 uses .scss files for styles (Sass with Compass). This has some development advantages since you can use eg a single variable for your main theme colour and refer to it throughout, but it’s a bit more setup compared to just opening a .css file in a text editor.

We are also using a customized version of Mirage 2 on DSpace 5.x, but the same would work on 6.x. We actually have one master theme where most of the theme logic and templates lives, then twenty-six child themes that inherit from it. It saves us loads of time. In Mirage 1 we were maintaining all child themes individually!
