Upgrading Tomcat?

My DSpace 6 installation is on a remote server, running Ubuntu 18.04. I guess I goofed and installed Tomcat 8.0.37 instead of Tomcat 8.5. It works, but with assorted issues which may be because of the older Tomcat. Could you please suggest or link to a procedure to upgrade Tomcat, without blowing my working configuration?

First: your DSpace instance needs no changes, no rebuilding. Just
copy or move any files related to DSpace that you placed within
Tomcat's directory tree, in case of trouble. Make a copy of the
Tomcat configuration as well.

You don't say whether you are installing Tomcat using the Ubuntu
package manager or from source, so all I can say here is "install
8.5". I hardly ever touch Ubuntu systems, so I'm probably not the
person to ask about fine details of their package manager.

Tomcat 8.5 configuration is very similar to 8.0. If you are proxying
through Apache HTTPD, Nginx, or the like, it should be *exactly*
similar. If you are not, and you accept HTTPS connections, then you
have the option of using the new-style SSL support.

The old-style SSL settings (on the Connector element) still work, I'm
told, but I like the new style better.

Compare the configuration in the newly-upgraded Tomcat to the files
that you saved from the old one. There may be no difference. If
there is, you can see what to change.

Once you have Tomcat set up and running to your satisfaction, you
should be able to move or copy the DSpace webapps (or Contexts) back
into position.

If you are at all unsure, copy rather than move wherever you have a
choice.

I would expect that you can just leave a copy of the DSpace files
where they are now and expect them to work after the upgrade, but
(given a different distribution and a DSpace instance that I haven't
seen laid out) I'm not confident enough to advise you to rely on
that.

You have answered some real concerns. I am only using binaries installed using apt. I was concerned that ant might have built DSpace with dependencies from the Tomcat installation. I will also be installing the Tomcat binary, using apt. I am not a very advanced Linux/Ubuntu user, but I can still explore directories and check configuration files.

Dear Chris,

For what it's worth I have been running DSpace 5 and 6 with Tomcat 7.0.x for several years so your issues are likely not due to having an older Tomcat—you might want to look into those issues more (start another thread on this mailing list describing them)! Also, the Apache Tomcat project has announced (long ago) that the 8.0.x series is superseded by the 8.5.x series¹. Lastly, I see that Ubuntu 18.04 ships Tomcat 8.5.x with its system package manager². How did you manage to get 8.0.x? Are you on Ubuntu 16.04 perhaps?
