Move and upgrade should be done in two separate steps. There have
been a number of changes to the database schema between 1.8 and 6.3.
What I would do is:
1. Install an identical version of 1.8 on the new server.
2. Copy the old assetstore(s) to the new server.
3. Dump the database on the old server.
4. Restore the database dump to the new server.
5. Upgrade the DSpace instance on the new server to 6.3. See
https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC6x/Upgrading+DSpace
for details. You should read the upgrade instructions for each
release between 1.8 and 6.3 for changes in the DSpace
*configuration*, but the *code* can be upgraded directly to 6.3.
There have been significant changes in the configuration since 1.8.
