Email setup issue!!

I am getting this error in my Dspace 5.2 server. Mails are not getting generated.

Error: javax.mail.MessagingException: Exception reading response;

nested exception is:

javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Unsupported or unrecognized SSL message.

The first thing I would check: is the other end of the connection
actually using SSL/TLS?
