Expected media viewer behavior when true for images

Hi,

When the media viewer is set to true for images, <ds-thumbnail> gets replaced with <ds-media-viewer> on the item view page. Then instead of seeing the expected thumbnail (at the expected resolution), you see an overly large (blurry) thumbnail used as a background image (340x279) for the media viewer. 

This happens regardless of whether the main content includes images. For example, if the only item is a pdf file, and it has a generated thumbnail, this thumbnail is not shown as a thumbnail image but as a (large, blurry) background image for the image viewer. If the content is an image, instead of using the image as a background image for the viewer, again it uses the undersized thumbnail.

Is there any way around this behaviour?
