Only Returning Partial Metadata in Search Results to Optimize Performance

I'm just wondering if anyone or the community in general has tried/considered returning partial metadata results (e.g. minus virtual metadata) from searches in the UI, as many of those fields may not be used in the results pages, only in the item pages.
