"Related Files" section: how does it work?

So, there is the "Related Files" appearing within every handles right, how does it work, what is the rationale behind the choice to display certain files and not others? 

Has this anything to do with the files' metadata?

Hello,

I think you are talking about the "More Like This" section in the XMLUI?  It is described in more detail in our Documentation at:  https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSDOC5x/Discovery#Discovery-%22Morelikethis%22configuration

Essentially, it's just finding similar items based on what is indexed in Solr for that item.  So, we are just using Solr's "More Like This" plugin described here:  https://lucene.apache.org/solr/guide/6_6/morelikethis.html
