We are planning on replacing several DSpace 1.8.2 systems with a single DSpace 6.3 system.

One of the 1.8.2 systems has a handle server configured and running very smoothly.

Neither the DSpace nor the handle server software appears to have been updated significantly since the 1.8.2 release. Is it safe to assume that that's because the functionality / configuration hasn't changed significantly?

Does anyone know the behaviour of the handle server when ingesting items which already have handles?

cheers
stuart

Hi Stuart, the handle server is pretty stable, it doesn't do a lot.

Most import / ingest methods have a flag (like "restore" in AIP) to say "don't mint new identifiers for this item"

I don't remember if 1.8.x had AIP backup, but even just the simple SIP style item export / import should work that way for you as well.

BTW, 6.4 shouldn't be too far off so hopefully you'll get a few bugfixes for free! (a very easy minor upgrade if the timing doesn't work out for that)
