Hi ,
I am a teacher in the Department of Library & Information Science. I teach DSpace installation in my department for future librarians. I have succeeded in installing DSpace 6.3 in Windows 10 and have created communities, sub-communities, and collections too. I have a small issue, kindly help me resolve it.

The issue is that when I upload a sample video file or audio file to Dspace and browse for the same when I try the view/open option the file gets downloaded instead of playing in the browser. Kindly explain to me how to make it run in the browser itself.

Thanks to all in advance.

Dear Dr.M.Leeladharan,

DSpace is able to store digital objects and allow their discovery and download. At the moment there are no tools to play/visualize them.
You may be interested in exploring the add-on modules that 4Science developed for this purpose, particularly the Video/Audio Streaming module: https://www.4science.it/en/video-audio-streaming/

The module allows to transcode the most popular audio/video formats into a format (FLV, MP4) and encoding appropriate to the adopted media server. The module takes care of the registration of the transcoded file on the media server, local or remote, if necessary by creating different streams at increasing bitrates, segmenting and diversifying the channels (audio, video, subtitles) to enable adaptive streaming. The adaptive streaming allows the maximum reduction in the use of bandwidth, always providing each user the best possible resolution of the audio / video stream based on the device in use (supported resolution) and on the available connection speed. By varying the connection speed during the playback of the stream, the system is able to consequently alter the stream so as to improve the quality of vision or the playback fluidity in the case of the connection quality decrease.

The add-on is part of our #makeITopen campaign: https://www.4science.it/en/dspace-add-ons/

Best regards,
Susanna

Dear Dr.M.Leeladharan,

In our case, I followed and tweak a few modifications from the brilliant work done by VTechWorks. It is documented in this article: Video Playback Modifications for a DSpace Repository. Please do note that the code in that article required that you should have both mp4 and webm files for it to work.

Hope this helps,
euler
