On behalf of DSpace governance and Lyrasis, I am pleased to share out the 2022 Summary Annual Report from DSpace’s SCOSS fundraising campaign, which was made publicly available by SCOSS earlier this fall.  SCOSS  selected DSpace in 2021 as one of three organizations to support in its third round of fundraising.

You can access the Annual Report from the SCOSS website at the following link: https://scoss.org/annual-progress-reports-from-the-scoss-family/

Our fundraising efforts through the SCOSS organization have resulted in the establishment of a part-time Program Coordinator position to coordinate outreach, support further fundraising, and assist the technical lead in planning and coordination efforts. It has also brought in many wonderful new organizations to the DSpace membership and governance.

We deeply appreciate the organizations that have pledged to support DSpace via this campaign.  Their contributions will help ensure the sustainability of this vital platform for open science. You can see a list of these institutions in the DSpace wiki at https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSPACE/SCOSS+Campaign

Sincerely,

Kristi

Dear Kristi Park

can you explain how SCOSS fundraising/membership relates to the DSpace Development Fund and to the regular DSpace membership?

Best regards,
Martin Walk

Martin, thank you for the question.

SCOSS fundraising and the DSpace Development Fund are separate fundraising efforts with separate aims. In both cases, institutions may become members of DSpace through their contributions, but the funds themselves are tagged for specific initiatives.

Funds raised through the SCOSS campaign go towards a couple of defined goals: funding a program coordinator position and a software development position. Thus far, we've raised enough through this effort to fund a part-time program coordinator, as I mentioned. Separately, funds raised through the DSpace Development Fund go towards paid development (i.e. contracting with developers for governance-defined development goals). Right now we're raising funds to accomplish some web accessibility objectives.

Regarding SCOSS fundraising specifically and DSpace membership: SCOSS contributors become DSpace members for the term of their commitment (typically a 3-year commitment). We have mapped the SCOSS recommended contribution amounts onto the DSpace Membership levels to allow these contributors to participate in the regular DSpace governance structure. Our hope, of course, is that these organizations will continue to participate as DSpace members beyond the initial commitment.

I hope this helps answer your question. Please let us know if you have further questions or concerns.

Best,
Kristi
