Greetings!

We have DSpace 4.X running on Windows that we want to upgrade to 6.3 running on Ubuntu virtual machine. We have a small repository, so I presume that a desktop version of Ubuntu would work fine?  What version of Ubuntu would you recommend as of today?

I recommend that you use Debian 10 (Buster) instead of Ubuntu.

Thank you, Pablo, but my IT department explained to me that the backup server solution they are using has a client for Ubuntu, but not for Debian, which is a deal breaker for me :(

If I don't use Debian, would Ubuntu Server 21.04 work for me (understanding that it is only the second best choice)?

Stick to LTS releases. So 20.04.

Thank you, Tomas!

Just to clarify, would it be OK to use Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 or do I need the server version?  We are going to run it in in VMware and it will hold a couple thousand records, so no huge load or traffic.  If desktop is more user friendly (graphically), and would perform relatively well for our size, it seems a easier choice.  But if it has to be a server version, the so be it.  What do you think?

In our DSpace instances, we are using Ubuntu (which is also based in Debian) as we are not very keen in using Debian yet...
I would say it should be OK to stay with Ubuntu and stick to LTS versions.   As you don't need the Desktop stuffs, it is better to using server version.
