I have a 3D EBSD dataset of bimodal Ti64. It consists of equiaxed primary alpha grains as well as secondary alpha laths. I am trying to find a way to flag each grain as either primary or secondary alpha. The crystal structure is the same, so there is no way to tell from the EBSD patterns themselves.

My first thought was to threshold by aspect ratio, so I would like to be able to visualize the aspect ratios in paraview so that I can select a good threshold value. I made a pipeline to calculate aspect ratios and convert them to an element array. However, whenever I try to open the dataset in paraview, paraview immediately crashes. If I uncheck "AspectRatios (Feature 0)" and "AspectRatios (Feature 1)" when loading the data into paraview, there are no issues displaying other variables.

Attached are my pipeline and xdmf file. Is there some issue with how dream3d is converting the aspect ratios into an element array? I can access the raw values in the dream3d file just fine for example with Matlab or HDFview, which makes me think it is a problem with the xdmf file, but I am not familiar with this format and how it should look. Could it have something to do with the variables being saved as "Feature 0" and "Feature 1"? Why are they not saved as one variable with 2 components the same way things like Euler angles are?

Thanks,

Joe

Joe,

ParaView does not “understand” how to visualize 2 component arrays which is what you are falling into. Splitting up the array is the right thing to do in this case. I’m not sure why ParaView is crashing. Clearly something isn’t being generated correctly but I’m not sure what the problem might be.

What version of DREAM.3D are you using?

Hi Mike,

I am on 6.5.160. And I've tried multiple versions of paraview including the most recent version, all with the same issue. I've gotten around this issue by visualizing 2D cross sections of the aspect ratios in Matlab, so this issue is no longer holding back my analysis of this dataset, but I would still like the ability to view and threshold by aspect ratio in 3D in the future.

My full dataset is too large to attach, but here is a version that is cropped way down.  I can confirm that on 2 of my computers it causes the same issue with paraview. If you do not uncheck the aspect ratios when loading the data, paraview crashes.

Thanks,

Joe
