Hi everyone!

I'm new to the Dream3D community and have a doubt about how to extract a pipeline into a file to further work on in ANSYS.

If anybody can help me with this, it will be of great help!!

Thanks in advance!

DREAM3D does not support native Ansys files by default. You are probably going to have to figure out an intermediate file format such as STL Files or NODES and ELEMENTS files? Which version of DREAM3D are you using and could you give us some more information about what you are trying to do with DREAM3D? EBSD processing? Synthetic Microstructure Generation?

Hey Mike and Dream3D Community!

I'm trying to generate microstructures and eventually structures of open cell metal foams using Dream3D and then extract them into ANSYS to conduct structural and fluid analysis on the structures generated.

As of now, I am able to get the file in .dream3d and .xdmf formats but am unable to convert them into file formats compatible to ANSYS.

Which formats of file do you suggest to extract the data into and how to do so?

Thanks!

Hey Mike and Dream3D Community!
I am using the version 6.5.171 of Dream3D software and am trying to develop microstructures of open cell metal foams and then conduct structural and fluid analysis on the simulation using ANSYS.

I do not know what kinds of files that ANSYS can import. You will need to compile that list of file formats that you can import and then report back here. At worst you may need to write some python code to pull the data from the .dream3d (HDF5 format) and generate a compatible file.

Hi Mike!
I've exported the dream3D file in .vtk file format and am using an open-source tool to convert it to .stl format so that I can use it in ANSYS.
Will update the work progress once done.

Thanks!

DREAM3D has an STL file writer. This assumes that you made the surface mesh in DREAM3D itself.

Hi Prerana.  how did you obtain the vtk file from Dream 3d?

Dear Prerana,
Which filter did you use to create the VTK File? I would be curious if there is a filter that we could write that would directly export something into the proper STL file format.

In DREAM3D-NX the “Write STL Files from Triangle Geometry” has new options to output various “groupings” of STL files. One of those options is a single STL File. That might be helpful to you if you were using DREAM3D-NX. Of Course if you are using DREAM.3D for its Synthetic microstructure capabilities then you are sort of stuck with that version of DREAM.3D.
