Hi,

I have a 3D EBSD data set with a mix of roughly ellipsoidal grains (platelets) and more complex/irregular grains and I am looking for a reliable way to differentiate between them. The aspect ratios do not work reliably as they vary pretty wildly for the irregular grains. I've messed around a bit with the omega 3 values and it seems that may work, but after checking out the references from the Find Feature Shapes documentation I'm still a bit fuzzy on exactly what omega 3 means so I'm not quite sure how I'd go about selecting a good threshold value for it. Something like the Find Ellipsoid Error filter might also work, but I noticed that currently only works on 2D data. Does anyone have any input on whether or not omega 3 would be a good way to go, or any other ideas for reliably picking out ellipsoidal grains?

Thanks,
Ryan

Scroll down to the section on Omega3 values. If the grain shape vary wildly between the platelets and everything else then the Omega3 value might work out for your data set.
