Does Dream3D have a feature that can generate the 3D microstructure in the form of a 3D polygonal mesh that can be used for polygonal finite element analysis?

Thanks in advance

Hi Prashant,

Yes, you can create a finite element mesh using DREAM.3D. Please take a look at the filters in the SimulationIO package found at the following link, particularly Create Abaqus File and Export 3d Solid Mesh.

Thanks for your reply Saurabh. The documentation of SimulationIO states that it creates mesh input files for the packages that work on the standard finite element method.  I wish to get the output microstructure in the form of a polygonal or polyhedral mesh where each grain is represented with a polyhedron. No further meshing of grains into triangular, tetrahedral, or brick elements is required.

You will want to DREAM.3D pipeline that generates the microstructure, creates the surface mesh, and then exports the surface mesh as individual STL Files.

Thank you for your reply, Mike.
Will that STL file contain a polyhedral mesh that does not contain any surface triangle but only polygonal faces or polyhedra?

The STL file written by DREAM.3D is a standard binary STL File that contains the triangles that make up the surface mesh of the microstructure.
