banded microstructure

Hi,


I would like to know if using dream 3d it is possible to create dual-phase banded microstructures. In all the examples that I found in the literature the grains are always randomly dispersed. Thanks in advance!

Are you referring to a “rolled” microstructure?

You will probably have to use StatsGenerator a few times in a pipeline to generate several microstructures and then “glue” them together using the “Append Z Slice” filter. Then you will probably want to run a Potts Model filter to try to “fix” the abrupt interfaces between each microstructure. This procedure would create a very simplistic model of the image but maybe not as satisfying as you would like. How much work you will need to put into this depends on how much you want your model to approximate that image.

Yes, a "rolled" microstructure with segregations, where there are bands of martensite (high carbon areas) and bands of ferrite (low carbon areas). See the example below with ferrite and austenite, extracted from the thesis "Multiscale thermomechanical analysis of multiphase materials" of Sourena Yadegari Varnamkhasti. In the upper part, the austenite grains are randomly dispersed. In the bottom part, the austenite grains are located at the center in a band. The idea is to do something similar to the bottom part with ferrite and martensite.
