Help with a mousetastrophe!

Hi all,

Dionne (copied in) is having a mouse nightmare. They are getting into her house from somewhere and she can’t work out where. She’s blocked up everything she can think of blocking up and yet her cat is leaving dead mouse presents in rooms all over.

She’s had people in, and tried everything she can think of to no avail. She’s now moving out as she can’t cope any more.

This is something of a Hail Mary but can any of the great maker minds in the DoES community offer any thoughts on actions Dionne might take?

Blocked up how? Wire wool? I hear that's the only way to stop them chewing through the blockage.

That is SO many mice... Any chance they're coming in under the floor from the neighbour's house? Any gaps in the skirting?

Here's what I have done so far:

1. Taken out the kitchen and had the contractor fill up any visible access points with wire wool.

2. Fill all gaps externally across all 3 sides of the house with special weather and mouse resistant foam.

3. Cover all external air vents with know proof vent covers

4. Cover all internal air vents with know proof vents covers.

5. Covered gaps at the back of all the kitchen cupboards (used to fix to the wall) with know proof mesh screwed into the wood.

6. Pulled up the carpets and underlay and covered active areas with know proof mesh screwed into the floor boards

7. Filled gaps about base cupboards with rolls of know proof mesh, covered in weatherproof mouse resistant foam.

8. Paid for professional pest control trol who have done 3 courses of poison over 12 months.

9. I have co tinted to lay (the same) poison across the whole ground floor of my property. 

10. I have purchased 4 plug in pest repellent decvices

11. Contacted environmental Health multiple times who insist there is nothing they can do

12. I only have 1 neighbour who looks like a hoarder. We have never met and they never answer the door. Today I wrote a kind letter with a bottle of wine and chocolates to try and get a response. 

I am averaging 5-6 mice per day in kitchen drawers, cupboards, running across floors, crawling over my curtains. I can't use any food or kitchen items as everything has mouse droppings.  

I have packed me and my daughters stuff to stay with family ass the home is now uninhabitable. 

I have run out of money and options.

That’s awful

I’ve had them but nothing like this invasion 

I believe Liverpool has more rodents than anywhere else in the country because there’s a disused sewer giving them access (like a super metro) 

Can you leave a feral cat there while you’re away? 

If they’re living in the walls (or in someone’s walls) as a nest- might mean bashing a hole to get it out. 

Try your MP. The council have to intervene as it’s a public health issue. 

Really hope they will be banished

OMG this sounds a real nightmare. 

On a significantly smaller scale, we had some success using a wildlife camera to identify where mice were coming in. It was from under floor boards and solved with expandable builders foam, and also removed a food source (bird seeds).

We also once had a rat getting into the loft using an overhanging tree branch that touched the property. 

But it sounds like you've done everything imaginable. If you think it might be coming from the hoarding neighbour, maybe social services can help? I mean even if you manage to get a handle on this temporarily, there's so many that they will find a way in again.

Hey!

I had the same situation a couple of years ago...

Try spraying peppermint around the edge of the floor, if there are any holes (by a boiler; there's always a hole in the wall they can get in, kitchen base unit; may have holes) use Steel Wool or a Scourer to fill the holes. Mice hate steel wool and scourer - mini blades to them.

They may be coming in from the Vent on your outside wall...use the following...

Roshield Pest Proofing Air Brick Mesh Vent Cover | Mouse Insect Rodent Control Prevention x 2

As long as you fill the holes you're good.

As soon as I put the Air brick mesh vent cover outside and filled the holes, I was sorted.
