I was actually going to write my own app to do this, and then I found admindocs, and the description made it clear that a lot of the functionality I wanted was already there. I just finished installing it, and it is a beauty to behold. Even better than I had hoped - and way better than fooling with sphinx, which I tried last month. Thank you, thank you, thank you, and job well done.
