How to create variables for an e-commerce website

Hi am looking for resources to create variables such as size and color to an e-commerce website

One solution is to make a 3 columns table , the first column is 'property_name' , second column 'property_value' , third column is a foriegn key to the item that this property belongs to 'item_id'
