If I send a request to an invalid URL, the NEXT request sent to that URL is processed incorrectly by Django. I've ruled out any client side shenanigans

Have you tested it with a production server? The dev server is for testing not suitable for production.

Anyway. If you think there is a bug, you should visit the Django github community and raise the issue there.
