Did you do that via collectstatic? The following works for me ...
/usr/bin/python /var/www/ssds/manage.py collectstatic
--settings=ssds.settings.staging --noinput
... in Django 1.6.x on Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 14.04 using Python 2.7.x
on both systems.
