I'm a grad student in a virology lab but have been interested in the diybio movement for a long time.
I'm particularly interested in genetics despite what I currently work on (although I do teach a genetics lab to undergrads).

One thing that has confused me for awhile though is where you guys get some of your materials. I know when we order stuff (even low biosecurity products) we have to prove that we are from an institution.
How are you guys getting around this?

It's not a legal requirement to have a license to order/possess arbitrary DNA in most of the West. The only exception I know of is France, where an origin of replication or a resistance cassette can lead to a plasmid being regulated like a GMO in its own right.

Some DNA foundries require institutional backing, others don't. Same for most chemicals that aren't outright dangerous.

Strains above BSL 1 are regulated in most countries, but the larger problem is MTAs barring safe strains being shared freely. This probably has the effect of encouraging less safe strains like home-isolated wildtypes, IMO.

I typically order from the-ODIN.com. If they don't have what you need, most companies will still send stuff to a business address. Just can't be residential. Feel free to email me if you need more info.

It's not necessary to go around if you can go through. Be an institute.
File a doing business as name. Act like you know what you are doing.

Or use companies such as ODIN to be your institute-shield.

Thanks you guys.
I knew there must be a way! So for Odin you can request specific stuff? I do know about the kit they have but we already do stuff like that in the lab I teach. I'm trying to put together some protocols for other stuff after I assess legalities.
And defintely, I'll be shooting you an email at some point (second poster- sorry can't see your name now) after I have some free time and can start enjoying this hobby (right now having too many late nights in my own lab - rushing to complete an abstract). Thank you for the offer!

The cool part about a community like this is that it can be used to find like minded people that will want to trade materials, and you only need a business license / tax registration / location to send it.

Most people just don't have -20 freezers at home to store things like host E.colin strains, plasmids, etc.

Yeah, the Odin is just an online store for these kinds of things. They don't sell anything dangerous, so it can be shipped right to your house if you live in the right countries.
