BioHackerspace Info Database - Help Edit!

The list of Biohackerspaces on diybio.org is woefully out of date so I thought I would crowdsource the info from you all. I have tried emailing or contacting a bunch of groups some have given me lots of info(THANKS!) others with no response(and one which told me that I couldn't have the info) but maybe I just contacted the wrong person? I figure maybe you all out there know who to contact or maybe you help out with one of the spaces?

This way now people can edit the list anytime they want to make sure everyone has the most up to date info. Please help me complete it!

Great idea.

diybio.org its out of date because theres no way to edit it ourselves....you can email though,

But your hack is good Josiah.

we get something to edit, and diybio.org can just take that info and put it up on the site :)

Would it perhaps be interesting to add some more fields? As an inspiration, hackerspaces.org, lists (approx) number of members, size of rooms, whether the space is open to exchanges or offers residencies. Perhaps one could even add something about what kind of gear and which projects the spaces make? Just a thought :)

Disclaimer: I'm curious about DIY biology from a social scientific perspective (and I'm still kind of an outsider to this community), so this would also be a nice ressource for me, personally.

There's a nice database of uk hacker.maker whatever spaced which includes many fields like size, membership cost.
It's on nesta. ..but on phone do don't have it to hand.

Hi All -

This is great timing because a few volunteers have been working for a couple months to prototype a new resource devoted to community labs and biohacker spaces. 

Our plan was to get the prototype a little further along and the workflow ironed out a bit more until we invited feedback and contribution from the broader community. But, since there is some momentum around this idea now, we'll share an early draft of the plan: 

The "Community Lab Index" is a collection of information about community labs and publicly accessible biohacker spaces. This resource will have two components: (1) an expansion of the diybio.org/local web page and (2) a booklet that can be downloaded for free or print copies will also be available for purchase.  

To build out the resource, we created a set of basic questions (year founded, address, etc) plus some questions that will help show the character of the space/people, such as "favorite piece of equipment", "featured projects", "origin story", etc. Ellen at Genspace contributed some content and photos, so we could work on the prototype and my friend Gretchen, is doing the print layout prototyping. We're also hoping to commission cover art, and get some print quality photographs of each space in the public domain.

I'll post more of the nuts-and-bolts, along with the workflow for community members who want to contribute and community labs who want to be featured in the first edition -- but, I'm on the run today.

In the meantime, check out the early prototype of the booklet attached. Still some things to improve in next iteration (e.g. URLs missing, etc), but you'll be able to get a sense.

BTW, we do continuously update diybio.org/local (thanks to volunteer Hope for managing those updates, typically within 24 hours of getting an email). Its been pretty amazing seeing the number of new sites really climb over the past couple of months, with more than a dozen updates to the page. We've definitely "outgrown" the initial format. One reason we're excited to help create new useful (and pretty!) community info resources.

Hey Jason,

     I think the point is that DIY and hacking is about everyone having access and control of the information flow. By placing the information on DIYbio.org takes control out of the hands of the people who should have it, the Biohackers.

Instead I have created a wiki at http://biohackerspaces.org

i think there was already quite a few efforts to set up wiki's for "all" biohackers :-)

(no one really uses it, more of a europe focus... administered by pieter, waag, i think)

seems to have some spam-user registration troubles, so only approved users will be able to use it.

talking about wiki's, yes i also think they are great, but needs care and maintenance. protection from spam-bots, engaging an active community etc.. see hackteria.

we were dreaming of 1000s of users :-) active since 2009, but in the end of the registered 400 users, only 5-6 are active.

we'll see, most important is to cross-link all these different maps and lists.

I underestimated the amount of work it takes to run a wiki indeed. It is such a living dinosaur, just like wordpress. Every plugin that should protect against spambots seems to be security risk on it's own again.

Like Marc said there are already many lists out there, but there are certainly blind spots. Don't forget to mention Laurel's photoshoot list as well. In the end a list of labs simply needs curation. Calling upon the community to feed in some info only works for a limited amount of time. Anybody that runs a open biolab probably swamps in questionnaires already. Like today www.didiy.eu knocked on the door. Doing the same thing we did less than a year ago, putting >1000 organisations on the map: http://digitalsocial.eu
