Does anyone know offhand the most cost effective methods for extracting DNA of a target species?  For starting materials of either blood or scales (from reptiles).

What is the intended use for the DNA?  Most downstream applications work fine with a home-brew proteinase/RNAse treatment from tissue samples.  For direct sequencing it should be a little cleaner, but for PCR or cloning it would be fine.
