News from the Open Biolab Graz-Austria (OLGA): Permission for GMOs!

Dear fellow DIY biologists!

Since today its official: We recieved the permission for work with GMOs from the government! We are proud to be the first open lab in austria(europe) (or maybe even whole europe?) to hold this permission. (It's prohibited in most of europe to work with GMOs without a special permission)

We also moved about two month ago out of our former lab which we founded in january 2013 and found a big makerspace together with the fomer 'traditional' hackerspace 'realraum'. Below are a few pictures of our new biohackerspace.

I'd like to invite all of you to visit us someday!

-Analytical balance, Metler Toledo

-Capillary electrophoresis system, Waters Quanta 4000

-Fast protein liquid chromatograph, Pharmacia Biotech

-Spectrophotometer, Beckmann

-Bioreactor, Briefcase Biotec

We did not write it down yet, but actually it is quite straightforward!

Our government provides all informations and forms needed for the process handily on a webpage, so we actually just had to download the form and fill it in... ;)

The people from the genetech agency were really helpful and excited themselves, so we could work out the process together with them.

To get the permission you need to meet certain equipment standards (autoclave, a few security measures like chemical-proof workplaces etc.) and organise a few official "biological security comittee" members (2 internal, 1 external) with whom you need to discuss and document your genetech projects. These people must have at least 3 years experience working with GMOs.
There also will be a few inspections where the equipment and documentation is checked and in theory they could fine us if we don't meet the requirements - but of course we don't expect this :)

Not yet, I am afraid. We are still working out our processes and don't provide much educational ressources yet.
But we will of course document interesting projects and provide them to the community.

A GMO according to EU law is an organism which is modified with foreign DNA, be it from a synthetic vector or another organism. It is actually allowed to modify organisms with DNA from the same species, eg. create an E.coli XL-1 blue gene bank from E.coli DNA. Directed mutagenesis etc. is also not regulated by gene tech laws.
It is also very difficult to impossible to work with GMOs outside the lab, so it's forbidden to plant GMO plants in your garden or grow glowing GMO fish. :)


Feel free to ask anything you want to know, maybe some of our experiences are useful to other labs too!

Just that in Europe S1 is also heavily regulated.

People do that sometimes (live video streams); I think it is required for FabLab licence.
