Hello everyone,

With openbiotech.com being down for the time being, I've found myself without a supply of Taq polymerase that isn't from a large corporate source. This hasn't been too big of a problem, but it does represent some inconvenience. After Christmas I'm going to have the PolI gene synthesized and place it in an expression plasmid so I never have to deal with a supply chain issue again for Taq poly.
Would anyone else be interesting in purchasing Taq poly, ligase, and the few other enzymes I'm going to be synthesizing? I don't know how many of you make your own already. I really love the business model of openbiotech.com, open sourcing biology and selling enzymes/reagents at prices that aren't extremely marked up.

So, if anyone is interested, let me know. If there is enough interest, I'll send out a few samples to kick it off.

IIRC someone here already has a proof-reading polymerase synthesized.

Gene and cell technologies uses the sane vector as openniotech to produce taq. Listings on eBay and their main site. I use it all the time for routine pcr. I got the 4mL vial for under $100. Www.geneandcell.com

Count me in for plasmids (not strains, my license is currently expired)
please! You'll be making them "Open" to some extent, what does that mean
for you? OK for cultural, personal, commercial, modification,
derivation, etcetera? :)

Thanks for the offer, delighted to see people taking up the torch!

Here's a source that was started by Josiah (who is relatively active
on this mailing list), $15 for 500uL (20 to 40 reactions it says):

I have a his tagged taq polymerase vector and strain that contains it. I haven't used it in a while because Taq prices are so cheap these days.

The problem with his-tagging is that it is proprietary. I was hoping to go into a more open direction.

Totally open for all use! Attribute though, of course.

It would be super convenient to have certain often-used catalytic pathways already in plasmids, like chitin synthesis and so on.
Also, do we know of any way to ubiquitinate proteins relatively easily? Or is that for another thread?

The original his tag patent expired in 2003. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyhistidine-tag
