DIY Kjeldhal

We would like to quantify nitrogen levels in soil for some experiments with legumes, but are dreading having to set up a kjeldhal.

Does anyone have any experience with a different, more straightforward, more DIY approach?

How about the Dumas method, seems like the big hurdle would be the 900
C heat requirement.

could be a colorimetric assay a way to go?

colorimetric assays or even electrodes would work for measuring inorganic N such as ammonium and nitrate/nitrite, but total N content would have to be determined via dumas or kjeldhal...
