Hi all,

I've got a question for those of you who have an idea of legal side of things in the UK. I'd like to make a private garage-type molecular biology 'lab' in the UK. At the moment I don't consider genetic modifications nor bacterial/mammalian cell culture. I only would like to have a facility to assay for SNPs on genomic human DNA. That's it.

Is is legal to do so in your own/rented private property in the UK? Do I have to give notice to the local authorities at all?

Any help appreciated.

Best,
Abdul

a)  AFAIK, even in Germany and Austria it is legal to do analyze your own DNA. Not the one of others without their approval.
So if you want to upgrade it to a GM lab then you should get legal permission.

Plus,
b) who can stop you from doing so
c) who is controlling it
d) what are the penalties

Look up b,c,d. Probably
b) noone
c) noone cares if it isn't GMO and you don't infringe privacy of others
d) probably none as it's probably not forbidden

if it's purely your own DNA, no problem I think.

The moment you're keeping another humans tissue samples on site though you're in for a world of pain with complying with the rules of  the human tissue authority.

Thanks for the reply. These things are not going to stop me anyway but I like to be on a safe side of things...

David,
I wander whether someones scraped cheek cells / extracted DNA (with their permission) is regarded as tissue sample? Would you know?
Thanks

William,
Hmm...looks interesting. I wish you've got one in midlands.

Hello  Abdul
I'm from UK too, i'm kind of a noob to all of this (altough I'm doing first year of Natural Sciences at Uni-but no practice at all!) If you wan't to hook up let me know.
I'm setting up my own lab at home, already have some equipment, but after reading a lot of post in this group i'm going to start slowly with bacteria and fungi :)
I'm live in Bucks btw!
