Just came by this.
Might be a nice way to share your DIY projects with the world. Is there anything similar to this out there, on the internet?

Arcturus looks interesting, and the first I have seen like this. They do the assembly and testing of your construct :)
Anything similar?  in what respect?
there are many sites, some for wet biology(e.g. http://openwetware.org/wiki/Main_Page) , some for 3d parts(thingyverse), some for general projects(https://hackaday.io)

https://www.transcriptic.com looks like a similar service.

Has anyone used them yet and can tell us about their experience?

I have used Transcriptic and I am looking into Arcturus.  So far I think Arcturus is better in my opinion even though Transcriptic does more.  Arcturus seems to be more DIY friendly, while Transcriptic caters towards more professional labs.
Let me know if you have any questions,
Alan

Hi,

My name is Don, I am also biohacker.. I founded syntechbio and now I am cofounder of arcturus biocloud.

Yeah you are right!, we aim to be the more easy tool to use, for biohackers and new people in the field. Our goal is technolgy democratization, reducing the complexity and the cost of the process.

We believe in the community, we have more than 300 users in our forum beginning to create their own projects

If you have any question or want to now more I will be this saturday in biocurious http://meetu.ps/2JD6CJ

Also feel free to send my and email to d...@arcturus.io or @Don_syntechbio at twitter

I've got to say that their website is not helpful at all. They have
about 1 sentence of information on what they can handle (all I know is
they use robots). I can't in any way tell if my experiments would work
on their platform. I'm certainly not spending the time to sign-up for
a login to their website just to see what they have to offer me.

To the Arcturus employees reading this... please make your site a bit
more clear. I'm sure you're already losing customers.

Maybe you should tune into the livestream of IndieBio SF Demo Day,
they're on stage right now! :)

Could it be... bait to a plug? :D

Clever. Esp., turtle shell. Was this presentation oversimplified? I ask because some people wanted to boot up a qorum sensing network of bacteria, to regulate all kinds of products within a single host.

Hi Nathan,

I am one of the cofounders of arcturus. First, wanted to thank you for your feed back. We have had several feed backs already from this beta version of the platform that we will use for the next version.

We are right now developing our second version of the platform and machines, so I hope all these issues will be corrected when we put that version online.

We have being working only three months so far in the version online, soon the next version will be release..

Thanks,

Nathan McCorkle

When you say next version, do you mean you're going to have a list of capabilities, analytical techniques, volumes for transfer equipment, etc...?

Hi Nathan,

The platform will have a list of genes you can use, from the library we are building, sort by function or role in the circuit you want to build, also the microorganisms in which you can put your assembly. But we wont get into details like volumes that you can transfer or technical details about protocols. We focus more in the functions that you can build (biosensor) or the whole experiment (directed evolution) instead of protocol details. We are developing a high abstraction platform for user with or without experience, so we don´t want them to worry about this and use their time more in the design of the biological function.

Please if you have more doubts or want to talk more about any related topic, you can write to my company mail d...@arcturus.io. Everybody call me don, but my name is Andres Ochoa.

thanks,

Hi Andres,

I like your concepts and the effort you guys have put in it.

Capabilities ,analytical tech and volume you can transfer though are essential part of what we need to understand in order to use your platform for experimental purposes.
Actions as trivial as "building a biosensor" depends heavily on parameters mentioned by Nathan in the previous post.
Moreover such "high abstraction" platoform would be gratily welcomed as soon as isn't going to over simplify molecular work till the point you don't understand anymore what you're doing at such a microscale. Eventually every A,T,G or C is gonna impact deeply our experiments.

Looking forward for an exhaustive reply.

Best,
Fede

Hi Brave,

Thanks so much for your kind words. We totally agree with you. We are beginning to explore how this tradeoff can be evaluated so we don't oversimplify the reality at some point that the system cant work.

At this point we are in an early startup stage, so we dont offer analytical capabilities yet. We offer the power of assembly combinations in a modular way. In this way you get access to low cost variables of your constructions, using standard promoters and rbs with different strong. So you can regulate the expression using this basic design. Then we send you the construction so you can test it and use your analytical resources. We are beginning to discuss some interesting applications as implement a sort of system to evaluate protein-protein interaction in a automated way and to try to produce a insulin open source (which is not so easy but could be pretty interesting. You can join us in the discussion forum and be part of the discussion.

thanks,
