Hi, all!

Today, we have fourteen definitions for POLTOPHAGY, which only required three minor edits for consistency in formatting and were then sorted in alphabetical order. I have not combined any. Any errors remaining are surely artifacts of my intervention.

One of these definitions was verified by a dictionary source. The remainder were clever deceptions dreamed up by your fellow players. Please vote for two by public reply to this message.

1. The ability to see dead people as living entities not ghosts.
2. An animal (or animals, collectively) killed by a vehicle on a road.
3. Feeding on a limited number of foods.
4. A forming method that uses ropelike coils of plastic clay, assembled in successive courses to build up a wall of a vessel or sculpture.
5. The habit of domestic fowl to gang up on one individual and literally peck her to death.
6. The habit or practice of eating chicken as the major component of one's diet.
7. Hiding behind a facade of unpleasantness.
8. The intracytoplasmic digestion of secretory granules by lysosomes.
9. Parasitism among microorganisms.
10. The practice of eating cephalopods such as octopus, squid, and cuttlefish.
11. The practice, used by some Native American tribes, of chewing animal hides to soften them.
12. The slow deterioration of rock caused by lichen.
13. Thorough chewing of food until it becomes like porridge
14. [Obs.] Vegetarianism.

As a lark, I cleared my SPAM folder after posting the word, and my only new messages have been someone contacting me about a Zantac settlement, a notice that my McAfee has expired (and the last time I used it was back in 1997), and a demand that I unsubscribe from someone's mailing list, so I'm relatively certain none of them came from anyone on this forum (aside from the bots). If I still somehow missed your definition, please let me know.

Those new to the game may vote, as may veteran players and those who did not submit a definition. But do please vote before looking the word up.

Deadline for voting shall be 22:00 UTC on Wednesday, the 8th of July, 2020, which allows about 48 hours leeway. You can verify against your local time here: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=POLTOPHAGY+votes+due&iso=20200708T220000&p1=1440

I've taken to just editing the link directly, as that is quicker, easier, and it makes me double-check to ensure the times and dates are consistent. If by some fluke, they're still not, please default to the deadline as in the link, as that's what I'll be referring to.

Cheers,
Rx.

I though "Oh, good -- a couple of 'eating' definitions" -- and then there were too many. Oh, well. I'll go with these:

6. The habit or practice of eating chicken as the major component of one's diet.
10. The practice of eating cephalopods such as octopus, squid, and cuttlefish.

Dead things, chickens or eating - what a choice! I'll vote 10 & 11.

I'll steer clear of the ones which refer directly to eating and go for something on a smaller scale:  8 and 9, please.

8. The intracytoplasmic digestion of secretory granules by lysosomes.

9. Parasitism among microorganisms.

I'm with Judy M. in thinking it's about eating - but which one? Several more aren't exactly about eating but are close enough to qualify.

I'll try 3 - though the slightly related 14 is tempting - and 12, thinking that it's just close enough to eating, but far enough away to be deceptive.

3. Feeding on a limited number of foods.

1 reminds me of The Sixth Sense.

2 reminds me of my last road trip

3 reminds me of being hungry on my last road trip, not considering 2 as an option

4 is dangerously close to rubble

5 appears very similar to 2, with a difference cause of death

6 is what happened on my last road trip, since 5 wasn’t an option

7 is what I think about defs 1 thru 6.  And a façade is also a wall.

8 sounds like something that might happen after 3 with 2, or 6 with 5.

9 sounds like it might feed on 8.

10 at least won’t be like 2 or 5.

11 at least isn’t swallowing 2 or 5.

12 isn’t a food or death related def!

13 is something you wouldn’t do with 11.

14 Well, we’ve gone from land animals to sky animals to sea animals, may as well go to land vegetables for the next cycle.

12 for its uniqueness and 11 because I believe it.
